SPARKLER FACT

Sparklers, which are now popular party favors, had a much darker past as they were initially created as a weapon. Callinicos of Heliopolis, an ancient Greek architect, invented the first sparkler around 670 AD. He developed a hand-held firework weapon known as a cheirosiphon, which shot flames towards enemy ships. This early sparkler was also called Greek Fire and was designed to fend off incoming vessels. The modern sparkler originated in Germany around 1850, intentionally created and named wunderkerzen. This version consisted of a wire coated in gunpowder. By the turn of the 19th century, sparklers had evolved.
